Sunday on the River

Nelly said it: it’s gettin’ hot in herrre. Temps have been in the high 90s or low 100s, with a heat index – the “feels like” temp – in the 110s. It’s been a straight up solar assault for the past several days. But aside from concerns over keeping Rudy “hot body” Woodstrom cool and heat-stroke free, I actually haven’t minded the heat too much. I think the past couple years of regular hot yoga have helped build my tolerance for heat. And, of course, it helps that the air conditioner at our house and the one in Stevie Wonder (a.k.a. my trusty Corolla) have been working like charms.

To keep extra cool, we joined some friends for a tubing trip down the notorious Apple River. I wasn’t so sure about the plan at first, seeing how my memories of the Apple River include a swarm of drunken college kids trying to create a Girls Gone Wild video. But submerging myself in 1) a belligerent crowd and 2) a body of water that is roughly equal parts river water and urine seemed like a relatively small price to pay for the only bearable outdoor activity on such a horrifyingly hot day. And I was actually surprised by how low key it actually was. Or maybe we just got out of there before the college kids finally rolled out of bed with their hangovers.

After that, we brought the group back to our place for a cook out (no chance I’m using my stove in the heat) and an indoor doggie date with the one-year old black lab that belongs to some new friends we just met. Overall a great way to spend a Sunday during a heat wave!

Eating our Veggies

Yesterday we picked up the first week’s delivery of our summer CSA share (well, it’s half of a share because we’re splitting a full share with Allan’s parents). Here we have potatoes, swiss chard, lettuces, spinach, radishes, chives, potatoes, mint, rosemary, garlic snapes, pea shoots and a few strawberries (forgive the crummy iPhone pictures…I was too lazy to get out the real camera).

It all smells and looks so good. And it’s definitely fresh and organic. This little guy came with it all for proof.

There’s one thing in the batch that we don’t recognize. I’ve “googled” every kind of green I can think of, but the jury’s still out. Anyone have a clue?

Vacation Recap, Part I

We got back from our European adventure more than a week ago, so it’s about time we start to recap our amazing experience. We plan to write a detailed recap of each city we visited so we can remember everything we saw. In the meantime, I’ll just say that the trip was absolutely perfect. I’ve been describing it to people as a classic “bucket list” trip, in that we saw so many of the things people hope to see at some point in their lifetimes. We feel so blessed and grateful for the experience! Stay tuned for more details, coming soon!

Rudy in Hats

It’s been busy around here the past month and we haven’t had much time to update the blog. We’ll make more time after our vacation, which is coming up really soon! In the meantime, here’s how we’ve been entertaining ourselves in the little bit of downtime available.

Okay so the last one didn’t really happen. But how funny does he look in those hats? Man, I love that little monster.

Day at the Lake

This past weekend, we took Rudy for a walk around Lake Harriet, which gave me a chance to put my photography lessons to work and snap a few pictures. Here’s what I came away with:
